GOAT: Greatest Of All Timelines

With a spectacular Super Bowl comeback leading to his 5th Ring, Tom Brady has been declared the GOAT: The greatest of all time.

A friend of mine took a shot at me  for previous statements about me saying that Dan Marino was the greatest of all time. (Bias alert: I am a NY Jets fan so technically Marino and Brady have been responsible for a lifetime of heartbreak).

Now the reason we argue who is the best ever is because we all have different criteria for how we judge “the greatest.” For me it is simple, the greatest of all time is the one with the most pure talent. The arm strength and accuracy. The touch. The field general mentality. And perhaps the most important the Mindset. (I would argue all great QBs have a fantastic mindset.)

Another way of saying it is this:

If you were starting a team from scratch who is the QB (you could do this with any other position) who you would pick? THAT is your GOAT.

What are your criteria? Is it stats? Peyton Manning. Rings? Tom Brady. (or Joe Montana or Terry Bradshaw if the Dirty Birds don’t blow it yesterday). Talent? That’s where things get dicey for me because I could see someone making a case for someone like current Colts QB Andrew Luck: immense arm talent, mindset, mobility and he elevates a team with weaknesses most of the time.

While I am no longer resolute in my saying Marino was the best ever I look at Marino putting up the yards he did in the era he did habitually without a running game and a defense and it was awe inspiring. He didnt have Montana’s Bill Walsh designed West Coast Offense, Bradshaws defense, Tom Brady’s “system” that has produced a 14-6 (70% winning) record without him) or Mannings consistent offensive weapons throughout his career.

The number one criticism you hear about Marino is that he never got “The Ring”. This is a nonsensical argument. For starters Football is the Ultimate Team sport where while it’s possible for great players to elevate their team mates no one can carry a team devoid of a supporting cast. Furthermore QBs can earn “The Ring” while being a game manager and not an integral part of the offense. I can think of three QBs off the top of my head with “The Ring” who were side acts to their stellar defense (Jeff Hostetler, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson.)

Are any of them better than Marino?

Marino was a contemporary of Montana and Elway, both of whom had rings, Elway later in his career when he was no longer the driver of the offense. Marino had 10K yards more than Elway and 20K more than Montana. Those three defined the 80s and yet Marino lapped them stat wise but is downgraded simply because he never got “The ring.”

Would Marino have gotten Rings if he switched places with Montana? I think Marino to Rice would have produced a few rings as well and maybe even more prolific stats for both of them.

My point being is this: It is truly impossible to determine the Greatest of all time based on stats or championships when there are so many variables involved: such as teams (coaches and systems) they play for, supporting cast, and the era in which they played.

I decided to take a look at the stats of the top 12 passers in NFL history and the active QBs in the top 25. Their stats tell stories that the data may not tell: Look at the What ifs:

#1 Peyton Manning – Peyton almost came out of Tennessee as a Junior but papa Archie asked the team with the #1 draft pick, Bill Parcells and the NY Jets, if they would definitely draft him. The Tuna, brownie points for honesty, said he couldn’t guarantee that as the Jets were in rebuilding mode sequence #953 and Manning would have fetched a lot in a trade. Peyton returned for his senior season, the Jets traded the 1st round pick to the Rams who selected Orlando Pace a perennial all pro tackle while the Jets dropped to #8 where they selected James Farrier a linebacker who proceeded to be a perennial all pro when he defected in free agency to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Meanwhile Manning goes #1 the next year to the Colts who built up exemplary talent on offense. Marvin Harrison was there when he was drafted and they proceeded to add Edgerin James, Reggie Wayne, and Dallas Clark in the next few years. All 1st rounders all pro bowlers. All that talent and still only one Super Bowl victory with the Colts.

He goes to Denver with Demarius Thomas and Eric Decker and a few more pieces that rack up great numbers in the first year before he starts to collapse.

His final game, a Super Bowl win with the Broncos, he was little more than a side show to Denvers fantastic defense.

What if Peyton Manning is drafted by the Jets in 1997 what happens to his career. Is he number one statistical QB on this list?

#2 Brett Favre. Interesting Story. The Jets Ron Wolf tried frantically to trade up with the Cardinals to take Favre instead of the Atlanta in the early parts of round 2 in the 1991 Draft. Sensing desperation the Cardinals played hardball asking for the Jets #3 round pick, a deal the Jets would not swallow.

The Cardinals drafted DE Mike Jones, Atlanta drafted Favre (Who Ron Wolfe a year later with Green Bay traded for with a first round pick), and the Jets took the Rocket Armed Louisville Slinger Browning Nagle who proceed to suck up the universe.

The 3rd Round pick who the Jets would have missed out on had they traded up for Favre? Georgia linebacker Mo Lewis, a player who despite having an excellent and long career he is best remembered for Hitting Patriots Drew Bledsoe so hard he tore an artery in the QBs shoulder allowing some punk kid from Michigan to take his starting position which circled back around in history to Fuck Atlanta last Sunday.

What if?

In other words if the Jets made that trade for Favre that creates a potential 25 year swing in the Time space continum where Favre leads the Jets and Tom Brady has a three year career as a back up QB in New England no one ever quite realizing what they have on their hands.

How’s that for a what if?

#3 Drew Brees- I’ll keep this short. Was drafted in the second round of the 2001 draft out of Perdue and was so unimpressive in his first three years that the Chargers selected Philip Rivers in 2004 (Trade and pick with the #1 Eli Manning but you get the jist.) Brees, supposed to keep Rivers on the bench for a year, lights up the league in 2004.

Think about the Timing. What If:

Drew Brees has a big year in 2003 instead of 2004. Do the Chargers draft Rivers (#12 on the list and almost certain to move into top #7 or #8 next year) creating the environment for Brees to move to the more prolific for his abilities New Orleans offense which vaults him to #3 and does Rivers land in San Diego or in some shit hole where he is misused for most of his career?

4. Tom Brady – Currently considered the Greatest of All time. But it was some fortuitous bounces. What If:

Besides the above mention Mo Lewis Near decapitation of Patriots 1993 #1 Overall Draft pick Franchise QB Drew Bledsoe what if Brady sat on the bench a few more years before moving on as a free agent to some team that doesn’t have the Dark Hoodie. Where is he in history?

He was drafted 199 on 2000. What happens if he is drafted at 198 by the Rams who took SS Mat Bowen or Tennessee who took DT Robaire Smith at 197 etc etc. all the way to say the third round and again no Hoodie OR what happens if Brady slips another round and doesn’t get drafted at all. Is it really possible that the Greatest of All Time almost slipped through the cracks completely?

Or is it more likely that Brady was latent talent who went to a system which not only maximized his abilities AND has had success without him at the Helm?

5 – Dan Marino – Dan Marino retired when Bill Clinton was president where everyone else in the top 5 retired when Obama was president or are still active. Think about that. This era is the era of QBs. When Marino played you could mug wide receivers on the field.

The Guff between #5 Marino 61,361 and #6 Elway 51,475 is almost 10k passing yards. If 60k yards are the benchmark of the elite only one person drafted in the 80s or prior who reached it.

What would Marino do today in the Saints Offense which Brees has racked up such prolific numbers?

Marino put up elite numbers when No one put up those numbers (Except, perhaps, #7 Warren Moon who stared in a prolific 4 Wide Receiver “Run-n-shoot” offense.) Does Tom Brady rack up those Numbers on the 80s Miami Dolphins? Does Brady get the ring?

Now Marino, despite always lacking an elite running back and defense, didn’t go to a shitty team. He slipped to the AFC conference champions at 27 in the draft because of cocaine rumors.

Put another way in his second year he threw for 5,000 yards and lead Miami to another Super Bowl. Marino’s talent elevated his team to a point where they were CONSTANTLY contending. It’s hard to build from the draft when you are always drafting in the 20s, and lest we forget, this was mostly pre free agent days as we see it today.

But, you know, he doesn’t have the ring.

6. John Elway – Was always more of a rocket armed Field General and leader than a prolific passer, longevity lead him to eclipsing the 50K yard mark.

But again what if he didn’t demand to be traded by the Colts in the 83 draft. Where does his place in history reside?

7. Warren Moon – Undrafted out of University of Washington he also threw for 21k yards in the CFL for the first 5 years of his career before jumping to the NFL, racking up another 49K yards. Combining the totals from both leagues he approaches Manning and Favre territory.

But no rings so fuck him. And as a black man he did this in an era where despite going to pro bowls every year the media is openly questioning whether there will ever be a successful black QB 🙄

Can anyone seriously consider a reason why Moon is not in consideration for one of the greatest of all time? Again what does he do in Brady’s spread offense?

8. Eli Manning – Will surpass Elway next year and slide into #6 All Time. Beat Brady in Super Bowl twice and has as many rings as his brother.

Even mentioning him in the same breathe as those three will draw laughter.

Why?

Again Archie didn’t want him to go to San Diego which lead to a pick and trade with the Giants and then SD picked Rivers who had Brees yards (yada yada) another of History’s what if scenarios.

9. Fran Tarkington – if he won some of those super bowls against Superior teams he would be mentioned in the Same breathe as at least Montana. 47K passing and thousands more rushing.

10. Ben Roethlisberger Didnt realize he was here, did ya? Has a Chance to Jump to #7 ahead of Moon next year.

11. Vinny Testaverde – Literally Sucked in Tampa revitalized his career with Cleveland and the Jets. Imagine if he was just dumped after Tampa.

12. Rivers will Jump in front of Tarkington next year.

In the top 25 there are only 3 more active QBs

14. Carson Palmer 44,265 May be retiring.

21. Matt Ryan 37,701 Next year will Jump up to about 41,000 yards putting him #16 on the list behind Air Coryell luminary Dan Fouts. He has only be playing since 2008. Think about his potential numbers.

23. Aaron Rodgers 36,827 (Where is he on the list if he doesn’t sit behind Favre, Steve Young behind Montana style) all those years. What if the 49ers don’t select Alex Smith with the #1 in 2005?

Looking back over that list, I ask again, who do you pick to start a team from scratch?

That’s the greatest of all time. The GOAT 🐐

Is it the Kid with the best stats out of Tennessee? The Kid out of Michigan with the most rings? The undrafted black kid from Washington who lit up two leagues when Blacks “couldn’t play QB” or the Curly haired kid from Pennsylvania who never quite made it to the promised land but almost singlehandedly destroyed record books?

To many what ifs and can’t tells to be sure.

It is often said that football is a game of inches but it’s more than that, it’s a game of timing: the right people being in the right place at the right time…

A Tale of two 1st Ladies

Over at Chateau Heartise there is an excellent post on the look Melania is giving Golden Don at the swearing in at the inauguration. (follow the link for the picture and post it is well deserving of the click.)

I laughed when I saw that picture and read the commentary because for all the “this is how a real man treats a lady” nonsense associated with B HO (Barack kissing Michelle’s hand, Barack waiting for her at the car.) there is a 10.5 eastern European model looking at a man we have been reliably told is a double chinned cheeto with unrelenting lust.

It touches on a third rail of socio-sexual relations that the media would rather ignore.  We have been foisted with the propaganda that the Obama’s represent the ideal standard for male female relations.  Competent and dutiful beta husband and the strong independent female.  She is such an “equal” in their marriage that the media whispers her name for a presidential run in 2020.  After all if he did such a great job, how can she not be just as awesome.

The Trump’s marriage, we are told, is one of a soulless gold digger and a insecure playboy. There every interaction analyzed by betas gammas and omegas who know nothing of alpha male tendencies.

They are afraid to state the un-comforting fact: Melania, poor mistreated, abused, desperately seeking freedom Melania looks at this brute with Lust.  Not lust for the bank account, or the penthouse or lust for the private jet but lust for the Presidential penis. Swooning for the power he has earned by vanquishing opponents.

Every beta male (and the various sub-species of male) would trade their left nut for a dime piece like our new first lady.  And here she stares, pursed lips, radiant smile, piercing lustful eyes at the president waiting for all this pomp and circumstance to be over so that she can have her pussy grabbed. Cause that is the pussy that can’t be let out of the bag, The Alpha males of the world like President Trump, in exact accord with his actual words and intent in his Access Hollywood interview, can and do have their way with the women who swoon in their presence.

No holding doors, or kissing hands like a southern gentleman and certainly no kissing ass makes the women get wet.  Its being a boss.

That’s reality.

Politics is not reality.

Biology is reality. Psychology is reality

And Melania is exhibiting both in spades in that picture.

Meanwhile the outgoing first lady continues to perplex me with the worship that follows her.(Not Really)

She sat there all day unable to hide her begrudged frown. Her husband, whose actual policies this past 8 years are indistinguishable from the corporate loving republicans she hates, has enough composure and class to sit there knowing that Trumps election is a repudiation of not just him but the establishment he stood for.

She Looks Angry

Meanwhile Lady Obama, who has lived a very privileged existence on your dime, has received absolutely fawning coverage from the establishment press, and who listed her daughters as staff on foreign vacations… um… diplomatic trips so that they could receive salary, sits there all sour puss alternating being proud of America and fearing for America as cyclical as her fickle moods. This isn’t the message that has been foisted upon us.  We have spent close to a decade being told how beautiful and powerful she was.  Our failure to see so left us open to allegations of various “isms” namely racism and sexism.

Someone is not Happy.

She leaves as she came, ashamed of an America that funded her lavish existence the past 8 years. She will have a ghost written book that will have a glamour shot of her on the front cover in which millions will be deposited in her bank account.

img_1659
Even Hillary isn’t as angry

And still she’ll have that fucking scowl on her face…

Three’s a Crowd, the 4th estate is still Bullshit Inc.

I caught this picture and the subsequent story on Facebook today. Apparently No one showed up at Donald Trumps inaugural festivities. He’s very unpopular as the media incessantly reminds us.

img_1664

It’s funny that when Hillary was cancelling Rallies because they weren’t expecting a huge turnout the media didn’t cover it and when they did cover her rallies they zoomed in to make the crowds look more massive than they were.
Now size matters.
There’s many a reason a crowd would be bigger or smaller, weather being one example and demographics (Washington DC, and Northern Virginia trend heavily democratic) being another.
With that said I could understand more people showing up at 44s Inauguration. There was a moment to be proud as the 1st African American president Trumps the 44th rich white guy to be president.
But was crowd size really that different?
This being Bullshit inc. we are talking about so I figured they were lying so I looked for other images and came across this one. Sure does look like a lot of people.
img_1661
So the media is suppressing shots of Trumps crowds to prove exactly what?
I have a hunch I know why.
Politics (and Religion for that Matter) are not just topics for some but become a part of who we are, a part of our identity. The elitist organs of Bullshit Inc.  have identities revolving around Throne Sniffing felatiogarchy and don’t like being wrong, as they have been about everything since the escalator ride of destiny.
So wrong. Sad! As our new President might Tweet.
The Brains main function is not applying logic or reason or even truth but SURVIVAL.
When our politics become our identity than attacks on our ideas or our favored leaders become attacks on us.
The brain seeks emotional release to protect our ego as our ego needs our worldview to be correct because it holds our identity together. And God forbid the world sees our identity as… wrong.
Thus if nobody shows up for Trumps inauguration then that makes you Correct for having never supporting him. And all those assholes who voted for him so wrong. Hell they are so embarrassed by him now that they won’t even show up.
You were right all along!
Go ahead, admit it. You want him to fail.
You want him to fail so bigly that through the magic of confirmation bias you start seeing failure of your enemies everywhere. Like only seeing some angles of photos with few supporters . Reading only those polls showing how unpopular he is. Reading those stories saying that cutting Obamacare will both kill children AND cost money.
Now this phenomenon I describe knows no political ideology. The world was ending when (Obama, Bush, Clinton ) was in office and will continue past Trump.
However failure to see the success of your enemies will guarantee future failures. The democrats didn’t learn that with Bush. The Republicans didn’t learn that with Obama. And at this rate 2020 is looking like a repeat, as what could be Trumps legitimate and principled opposition is replaced by hysterics and tantrums and frankly a massive amount of willful denial of reality…

Obama: The False Messiah exits stage Left

I remember talking to a friend in the aftermath of the Obama Election in 2008.

Being a progressive she was euphoric, as I can certainly understand, about the loquacious Senator from Illinois. I was my usual dour asshole self refusing to believe in vague goals of “hope and change” from a man whose donor list looked surprisingly like his predecessor.

“The domestic surveillance will expand and the wars, overt and covert will continue. The middle class will suffer only you won’t hear about that as the media will fawn over Obama.”

☝🏼 Nailed it by the way.

To me Obama was nothing more than the continued corporatist globalist lineage of Bush/Clinton/Bush before him. He was actually kind of a shiny anomaly in the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton(almost) political dynasties, dynasties forged when VP Bush and Governor Clinton collaborated in drug trafficking through Mena, Arkansas in the mid 80s to benefit the Contras in Central America. Those were the days of innocence.

In the gestalt of failed Presidency of Bush the stupider the other Clinton had her scepter stolen by the articulate espouser of concentrated nothingness from Chicago.

While he did possess  a certain panache when regurgitating Telepromptered talking points then, as now, I found myself asking what all the hype was.

He wasn’t anti-war or pro civil liberties, as the democrats long gave up on that platform in their marriage to the Deep State. His raking in money from the financial institutions who caused the economic crisis showed he wasn’t pro Main Street despite his rhetoric. Deliberately opaque on what his actual policies were he glossed over details with flourishing rhetoric.

He was, in many ways, the broadcaster of mass psychological projection as any good politician should be.

Yes we can.

Hope and Change.

It was MAGA before MAGA in metaphor if not in practice.

President Obama went to work immediately bailing out banks and constructing his signature healthcare plan, a base rip off of the plan of the man who would be his 2012 Presidential Opponent.

Think about it: he even stole Romney Care.

The Insurance industry special interest created Affordable Care Act dispensed goodies immediately (staying on parents plan till 26, pre-existing conditions) held off undesirable outcomes until after the next presidential election (Forced compliance via increased taxation) and had co-pays and premiums sky rocket on the his way out the door in 2017.

Never has political legislation had that degree of precision involved in it.

Still did nothing for him.

It was an abject failure, a failure most Americans immediately recognized, as the Democrats in general have been ousted at every level of Government since then. It’s failure was probably the single biggest policy liability hurting Secretary Clintons election campaign. Who would have predicted that after the Bush disaster of 08?

Obama has been in hiding since the Mid-Term elections of 2010 having been soundly defeated. Democrats point to Mitch McConnells obstructionist words as the instrument of Obamas abdication of his office, spreading a false narrative of ALL the miracles that would have sprung from his bosom in only the Evil republicans let it.

Don’t let them fool you.

Obama has hid from a fight because he never had the stomach for confrontation, preferring surrogates to do his dirty work. Absent muscle he can not bear the thought of losing. If you don’t play you can’t lose, simple as that.

The man, always a sensitive soul who was light in the loafers, is no fighter.

Lauded for being “scandal free” due in no small part to lack of critical coverage the legacy amnesia media forgets his intrepidly  arming drug runners in Mexico (Fast and Furious) and Terrorist groups in Syria. We are told (falsely) that these operations were all the doings of previous administrations, started before he got into office. This is a defense, apparently, for president hope change: I will not put an end to injustice started before me, be it prosecuting torturers from the Bush administration or lifting a finger to stop drug runners and terrorist.

What an apt metaphor for Obamaism: Acquiescing to failure both past and present.

He has been content the past 6 years to vacation and Golf leaving the nitty gritty of running the country to the bankers and bureaucrats who buoyed his ascension.

With 95 Million Americans out of work  and marked increase in food stamp usage during his administration we are regaled with tales of his economic genius primarily because when you drop the long time unemployed from the rolls, never count the student loan debt saddled millennials who have worthless degrees and no jobs and take the IT guys now bussing tables you can massage the numbers to under 5% employment.

This should change in two days when the press rediscovers the labor participation rate statistics, at its lowest point in decades.

The other reason we are assured that Obama is an economic savant is “The Stock Market” which is at an all time high.

For those in our media, for whom history started yesterday, this is big news.

For those who understand the cyclical boom bust cycle of the stock market, or who at the least realize that Hayek won a Nobel Prize for describing it almost 5 decades ago, we are not surprised when you extend ZIRP for another decade and double national debt through stimulus spending you can cook the books on Wall Street.

While 200% increases in the Stock Market in 8 years are superficially impressive that’s nothing compared to 260% increase experienced by FDR from 1932-1937.

When the FED raised rates in 37 the stock market crashed 35%. Taken within a historical context the “Obama recovery” might be nothing more than a false peak through the Greater Depression we are in. Did I mention that the FED has just decided to raise interest rates slightly as president Trump ascends to the Oval Office?

Of Course they did.

Luckily for Obama he gets out after two terms, credit for where no credit is due. FDR stuck around, soaking in praise and adulation, finally removing us from the yoke of depression with his death.

This is the track record for those with Obamanessia: one piece of failed legislation, stunning collapse of his party at all levels of Government, the destruction of his parties anti-war pro civil liberties platform, wars raging across borders home and abroad and an entirely predictable “economic recovery” so built on quicksand his most ardent supporters predict (hope) it will collapse.

If your  8 years of hope and change can be undone in a few months by a reality TV star then it’s safe to say you accomplished nothing.

Rushmore can save the chisels.

As Obama is the standard bearer of the establishment neoliberal globalization policies that are being ravaged globally and in the west in particular you will hear glowing reports of the progress we made in 8 years.

Don’t buy it.

This is ultimately the Story of Obama.

He leaves as he came in, a media created messiah: sound and fury from the supporters but from an all too human man above his pay grade producing nothing more than a whimper in the dark…

A Conspiracy so so Vasterer than can be believed…

Boris: Comrade Nikolai I have great news!

Nikolai: What is this great news comrade Boris?

Boris: Russian intelligence has video of American Slumlord Donald Drumpf strlumphing Russian KGB sex swallow to use as Blackmail.

Nikolai: Splendid! What seat of power does he have that we can exploit?

Boris: He is a celebrity reality TV host with access to Gary Busey and Meatloaf.

Nikolai: I see.

Boris: But President Putin has magnificent plan.

Nikolai: Go on.

Boris: If we get this Drumpf to run for president and if he beats his 16 opponents with decades of political experience who have actually run for and won office before and if the Democrats change party rules to allow democracy suppressing Super delegates and if Secretary Clinton Run for office and if she used illegal non secure server as Secretary of State and if she gets caught with illegal non-secure server because of Romanian hackers and if she mishandles classified information and if she perjures herself before congress and if she is under bumbling investigation of Stupid FBI during nomination process and if the Democrats conspire to suppress Votes of Ideological Partner Comrade Bernie and if we can hack non-secure server and if we can have Wikileaks leak conspiracy between DNC and American Puppet Press and if she doesn’t campaign in the Blue Wall states that have gone democratic for over two decades and if we spread fake news that she is poor health and if she has actual medical collapse on 9-11… than Drumpf will become elected and we will have Kompromat against American president. HaHahahaha

Nikolai: Really?

Boris: Yes. Is fool proof.

Nikolai: Can’t we just donate to Clinton Foundation if we want to influence American Politics?

Boris: Net, Dumbkof, that would never work…

A Bite out of the Gene Pool

I saw this article and I had to Chuckle.

Crocodiles have been kicking it on planet 3 for about 55 million years. Haven’t changed too much in that time.

Our immediate ancestor to us and Neanderthals, Homo Antecessor, was around 1.2 M years ago, while about half a million years ago Neanderthals and Denisovan homo lineages split and homo sapien (us, kind of) shows up a scant 200K years ago.

Now I haven’t been around that long myself but while humans have evolved greatly in a short several million year period I’m sure Crocs have been doing the same Shit for the past 55 million years, namely biting dumb asses who get too close.

This leads to an important evolutionary and sociological question:

Why are Crocodile species going extinct while there remains way too many stupid humans?

I think the answer lies in the fields of Evolutionary Psychology and Technology.

Humanity in all her species and sub species has had a fairly rough go at it most of her existence. The fittest and strongest passed on their genes producing a hardy stock to carry the lineage into the future like every other form of life on the planet.

Part of this evolutionary process involved development of the brain and cognitive function. The part of the brain that tells you don’t get too close to the one ton reptile is the Amygdala. The Amygdala scans reality constantly looking for threats and is involved with learned memory and threat assessment.

Example: You see a primitive Neanderthal neighbor get eaten by a crocodile it sears a neural pathway into the lymbic system teaching you be careful around the big lizard. Next time you see a lizard that size you freeze, Amygdala recalls your neighbor being eaten, and before you know it the sympathetic nervous system responds and the adrenal medulla is producing a hormonal cascade to initiate survival mechanisms (Fight or Flight for the non nerds).

The better this system worked for Various Homos the greater the chance for offspring to continue and thrive.

And then came iPads.

Technology and modern living has stunted human development and potentially the evolutionary process itself. Instead of hard Amygdala developing life styles we live in such realitive comfort we don’t have actual stress.

Yes, your job may “stress you out” but sitting in a cubicle in a climate controlled environment plodding away at a keyboard to get computer digits created from the ether deposited into your bank account to buy food and Carmel macchiatos sure beats hunting a saber tooth tiger for dinner this WEEK.

Modern living has it so that these neuronal processes are so weakened your inability to evaluate threat assessment degrades to the point where you get bit in the ass by a crocodile while taking a selfie on your Thailand Vacation.

That’s the problem these days; you don’t have to be strong to survive. Any dumb ass can make it to tomorrow.

Because of modernity this tourist will survive and make a full recovery as she got quick modern medical attention (no Medivacs in the Bronze Age) instead of dying as crocodile lunch on a Thai river.

That’s the good news. The bad news is she can still reproduce passing on the stupid gene 😉

The Truce to end all Truces

A little over a century ago today, in a not well enough known story, hostilities temporarily ceased within the War to end all wars (which obviously didn’t end all wars). Truth be told all sides at that time thought the little dust up in Europe started in August would be over by Christmas 1914.

It started simply enough with German Troops singing “Silent Night”. They were soon joined by their enemy combatants, Scottish bagpipers cordially joining in defying the call to war just as their kilts defied the December cold. Along the Frozen Western Front, French, British Scottish (and some conscripts from Far away India and Nepal) and opposing German troops extracted themselves from their trenches and dugouts, approaching cautiously at first then eagerly, across so called No Man’s Land where comrades had fallen and the destruction of war was born. Greetings and handshakes were exchanged as were gifts. German souvenirs that ordinarily would have been obtained only through death – such as spiked pickelhaube helmets, or Gott mit uns belt buckles – were bartered for similar British trinkets. Carols were sung in German, English, and French. Good natured ribbing was also bantered about. A few photographs were taken of British and German officers standing alongside each other, unarmed, in No Man’s Land.

And then the unthinkable among bitter rivals happened. Without higher military sanction a friendly match of football broke out between English and German forces. Generals said nothing as the fight was ceased for cordial activities. Although not everyone kept quiet.

“Such a thing should not happen in wartime…Have you no German sense of honor left at all?” groused an unknown at the time whiney little fuck of a Corporal.

Considering the speaker this was to be expected. Adolph Hitler was always a Asshole.

Christmas night shots started to ring out reminding the suddenly coordial soldiers that they were still at war and within a week Hostilities roared as if they never ceased. Unfortunately the Spirit of Christmas Hitler won, then and tragically into the future as the seeds of future wars were tragically laid during the first world war.

I always think of this story on Christmas Day, the day Christians celebrate as the Birth of their Prince of Peace. Christianity spread from the Holy land, seeded upon the rocks and crags of Golgotha, where the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spilled. To this day, near that site in Jerusalem, three major religions exist in hostile truce marked by all too frequent bloodshed. It was from this hostile incubator that the LOGOS λόγος of Christianity spread; ideas centered on the trinity virtues of Love, Truth and Fraternity, ideas in search of a people, which it eventually found in its most receptive audience in the hardy stock of European men of the North. There has always been a word for So Called European wing of Western Civilization: Christendom.

When I think of today I always ask: What if…

What if Christendom didn’t resume its attricious slaughter of itself after the Christmas Truce 102 years ago Today?

No treaty of Versailles or Rise of Hitlers National Socialism from a decimated Germany?
No collapse of Czarist Russia into the ghastly Soviet Union?
No Spread of Communism and the horrors it unleashed on the world?
No Imperialist American empire that felt that all too often felt it necessary to turn to the Dark side to stop communism?

Of course hindsight teaches us that if we knew then what we knew now we might have stopped the most horrific aspects of the 20th century from happening. Maybe if more people knew of the Christmas truce along the Western Front 102 years ago today, learning from our mistakes and more importantly living within that spirit, we can have that peace.

That’s what the Prince of peace whose birth is celebrated today would have wanted, not just for his people, but for all good people who desired the Peace he preached.

Merry Christmas Everyone. And yes I mean everyone 😉
